Open Source Requirements?

I was wondering if there is a requirement for a project to be open source. Obviously, it's a cool thing but owning the code is also cool, considering the hard work that has been put in.

It's not required, but you must give the judges a way to view your project at judging time. Typically, the easiest way to do that is to make it open sourced.

Additionally, I've seen 0 projects in my lifetime "stolen" from a hackathon submission. Execution of your idea is 99% of the job, typically people won't try to steal your work until you've long already been successful.
